There's a positive side to recent events in Britney Spears' life.

The 44-year-old pop star recently checked herself into a treatment center, a rep for Spears told PEOPLE over the weekend, after she was previously arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI) in Ventura, Calif., on March 4.

In an Instagram video shared three weeks after the arrest, Spears was seen spending time with her sons Sean Preston, 20, Jayden James, 19, shared with ex Kevin Federline. She also thanked fans for their support in the caption.

Now, a source tells PEOPLE the "Piece of Me" singer feels positively about reconnecting with her sons.

"When she's not in a good place, it's almost impossible for her to maintain any kind of steady connections," says the source.

"She wants to be a good mom though. She really loves Preston and Jayden and listens to them," adds the source. "For Britney, it's amazing that she gets to spend time with them again. It makes her very happy."

The source also noted Spears was "very upset and shaken" after her arrest on March 4 and ultimately chose to seek treatment with the encouragement of her team.

"People around her do care a lot and are constantly trying to support her, but it can be difficult," said the source. "There have been a lot of concerns since the arrest."

According to the source, Preston and Jayden "were a big part of getting her to rehab."

Many fans of Spears have been concerned about her erratic social media presence since her conservatorship ended in November 2021.

The source told PEOPLE Spears' "life was more structured and more stable" during the conservatorship due to "people guiding decisions and making sure things stayed on track."

"With her independence, you started to see more instability in her day-to-day life," said the source.

In a statement to PEOPLE after Spears was released on March 5 following her arrest, a rep for the Grammy winner said the "unfortunate incident" was "completely inexcusable."

"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life," the statement continued. "Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

Spears' rep added that Preston and Jayden were "going to be spending time with her."

“Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being,” the rep shared.
