- - How 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' opening weekend compared to first two films

Moviegoers are taking the return trip to Pandora.

"Avatar: Fire and Ash," the third chapter in James Cameron's epic science-fiction series, earned $88 million in North American theaters for the film's debut weekend, according to estimates from Comscore released Dec. 21.

This marked a decline from the $134 million opening of the previous installment, 2022's "Avatar: The Way of Water," though better than the $77 million opening weekend of the first "Avatar" in 2009.

While $88 million would normally be considered a slow start for a movie on the scale of "Fire and Ash," the box-office run for "Avatar" movies tends to be a marathon, not a sprint. The series is known for having significant staying power in theaters for several weeks.

In 2022, the domestic debut of "The Way of Water" was considered somewhat underwhelming, which raised early concerns that the film could be a box-office disappointment. That fear turned out to be unfounded. Over the holiday season and into the new year, "The Way of Water" continued performing well and ultimately became the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide (unadjusted for inflation) with a $2.3 billion global haul, including $688 million in North America.

The original 2009 "Avatar," the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, finished its run with almost $750 million in domestic ticket sales, nearly 10 times its comparatively small opening. A typical blockbuster will usually gross closer to three times what it made in its opening weekend, and often less during the crowded summer movie season.

As for why "Fire and Ash" may not have opened as high as "The Way of Water," this could be because the 2022 film arrived after a lengthy, 13-year wait to see another "Avatar" movie, whereas audiences only had three years of anticipation for "Fire and Ash."

Reviews for "Fire and Ash" were also more muted than for "The Way of Water," with many critics arguing the new movie was too similar to its predecessor. Moviegoers, though, seem to like both films equally. Audiences polled by CinemaScore, which conducts exit surveys at theaters, have given all three "Avatar" films the same grade: A.

Whether "Fire and Ash" continues performing well at the box office in the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the franchise's future − and whether it has one at all.

You are in fact seeing double. Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers who return to their Mississippi hometown to open up a juke joint in Ryan Coogler's "Sinners." Here's how the horror movie ranks against the rest of the year's best movies.

Cameron previously announced he planned to make at least two more "Avatar" sequels, and he has even filmed some of "Avatar 4." But the director has also said he could end the series with "Fire and Ash" if the movie isn't a smash hit.

"The reason not to continue would be if the business case collapses because theatrical is falling," he told USA TODAY. "These are films that are designed to be in a theater first and take you on that transportive experience. So there's a matrix of, 'All right, what are the economics?’ And that will emerge over the next couple of months."
